Adolescent/Teen Self Harm Therapy, Bucks County, Pa.

It can be scary when your Adolescent/Teen is struggling with self-harm behaviors in Bucks County, PA.  A professional therapist can help mitigate these behaviors. Adolescents/Teens who engage in self-harm have a compulsion or intense draw to hurt themselves, typically to cope with emotional pain, intense anger and frustration. They’re also often adept at hiding those behaviors from their friends and loved ones, meaning that this issue can grow quite severe before parents realize what’s going on.

Self-harm behaviors may include:

  • Cutting
  • Burning
  • Skin picking
  • Hair pulling

Our Approach

We begin with an intake evaluation to assess the severity of the case, which is based on how often and to what degree the Adolescent/Teen is hurting themselves. From there, we seek out the fundamental causes of these harmful behaviors and help the patient develop more positive coping mechanisms. Depending on the diagnosis, we may engage in a variety of therapy methods, including psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy), and a psychiatric consult may recommended in case medication as needed. For very severe cases, we may recommend checking into an inpatient treatment center for 30 days or more.  Inpatient is always a last resort and is ultimately up to the family to decide. If inpatient is recommended we will walk beside you from beginning to middle and through to the end. Once the adolescent is discharged we will create a treatment plan along with a team to meet the needs of the individual client.
